11/8/2023 0 Comments Learn french numbers(But if you’re staying in Switzerland or Belgium, definitely use their versions!) ONE HUNDREDįinally, we’re back to a single word: one hundred, or cent. I’ve never personally tried to use the non-French versions of the numbers in France, but many people online say that French people either don’t understand the word or will clarify the number you’ve said by using the “France” version of the number, it wouldn’t save you much time if you’re trying to communicate in France. In Switzerland and Belgium they often (or exclusively) use septante (70), huitante (80), and nonante (90). NinetyĪlternate versions of 70, 80, and 90 in Switzerland and Belgium Then, just like with soixante, you’ll have to get used to waiting until the end of the phrase when you hear numbers that begin in quatre-vingt, in case the number is not actually 80 something, but 90 something. First, get used to hearing quatre-vingt and immediately translating it to “eighty” in your head. Try to minimize the amount of math you do as an English speaker when you’re hearing numbers. The 90s are a combination of the – dix, – et-onze, – douze, endings as the 70s, along with the quatre-vingt beginnings in the 80s. There is an s at the end of quatre-vingt only when the number is eighty itself. The exact source of the “four twenties” concept existing in French is debated, but the general belief is that it is a remnant of a culture that used a “base 20” number system impacting the Early French language, perhaps from the Celts. Have you heard of the “four score and seven” phrase in the Gettysburg Address, or “The days of our years are threescore years and ten” in the Psalms Bible verse? But there is an old-fashioned word for them: score, which shows us that thinking of things in groups of twenty was more common once. That may seem odd, as we don’t usually think of quantities of twenty as anything special in English. The word eighty in French literally means “four-twenties” ( quatre-vingts). When you hear a phrase that begins with soixante, get in the habit of waiting until the full number is spoken before assuming the number is 60 something, because it might actually be 70 something. Note that seventy-one still follows the et pattern before the second number ( onze). Instead, sixty ( soixante) gets added to each number until seventy-nine. And see below for a side note on what other French-speaking countries use.) (Does this get confusing for an English speaker? Absolutely. In traditional “France” French, there is no separate word for seventy. Thirty is trente remember the et un rule for 31, making it trente et un and thirty-two is trente-deux, etc. Trente (30) is similar to trois (3) quarante (40) is similar to quatre (4), etc. Vingt (20) looks a little different from dix (ten), but for 30, 40, 50, and 60, you should be able to notice the similarity with the 0-10 version of the number. The et will only be added when the number ends in 1.įor twenty-two to twenty-nine, the pattern is “vingt” + hyphen + the ones digit number. Starting from 21, and for every multiple of ten going higher (31, 41, 51, etc.) until 91, the pattern will be the base number + et un (“and one”, or et onze, as we’ll see in a minute). SeventeenĪt twenty ( vingt), French is back to having a unique word for the number, just like in English. ThirteenĪt 17, French numbers start to have their version of the “-teen” ending, by adding dix (10) and a hyphen in front of the number to be added to dix. Then, in English, when we begin to add “-teen” as the numbers go higher, French continues to have its own “separate” words for 13 through 16. Just like in English, the numbers 0-12 in French are unique words. Individual digits in a number are chiffres (feminine) quantities of numbers are nombres (masculine). Let’s start with the normal, counting numbers (or whole numbers). In this post I discuss almost every type of French number and ways of talking about numbers and number operations in French (and in some cases, in Switzerland and Belgium).

The box flume that carried water (not timber) from Marlette Lake to Tunnel Creek Station is now the site of the popular Marlette Flume Trail. Today this is a National Civil Engineering Landmark. A relief force of ships sent by Ptolemy arrived in 304 BC, and Antigonus’ army abandoned the siege, leaving behind most of their siege equipment. He attacked the island with 40,000 men and weapons and started a war which lasted a year. In 305 BC, Antigonus sent his son Demetrius to capture and punish the city of Rhodes for its alliance with Egypt. In the late fourth century BC, Rhodes allied with Ptolemy I of Egypt against their common enemy, Antigonus I Monophthalmus of Macedonia. In 357 BC the island was conquered by Mausolus of Halicarnassus but fell into Persian hands in 340 BC and was finally captured by Alexander the Great in 332 BC. The capital city, also named Rhodes, was built in 408 BC and was designed to take advantage of the island's best natural harbor on the northern coast. Since ancient times, the small Greek island of Rhodes has been a main intersection between the Aegean and the Mediterranean seas, and was an important economic center in the ancient world. Some mystery remains as to where it was really located and what happened after it was destroyed. Bearing a striking resemblance to the Statue of Liberty in the United States, the Colossus of Rhodes stood for less than sixty years before being destroyed by an earthquake. The last of the seven wonders to be completed, it was a statue built to thank the gods for victory over an invading enemy. The Colossus of Rhodes was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the most ambitious and tallest statue of the Hellenistic period. 11/8/2023 0 Comments Secure vpn browserThis antivirus file is for iOS and won't work on your Mac. This is only intended for those curious as to why that rather strange technique actually makes mathematical sense. If you don't care, skip this, as it is hardly essential. This results in 12 - 69 = -57, which is correct. I assume you've had enough illustrations of inverting and adding one. The two's complement representation of 69 is the following. As before, we'll add the two numbers together. The last is the binary representation for -12. To get the negative of 12 we take its binary representation, invert, and add one. Now suppose we want to subtract 12 from 69. But let's use binary instead, since that's what the computer uses. If we're to use decimal, we see the sum is 81. Suppose we want to add two numbers 69 and 12 together. In the examples in this section, I do addition and subtraction in two's complement, but you'll notice that every time I do actual operations with binary numbers I am always adding. With a system like two's complement, the circuitry for addition and subtraction can be unified, whereas otherwise they would have to be treated as separate operations. One of the nice properties of two's complement is that addition and subtraction is made very simple. If you have -30, and want to represent it in 2's complement, you take the binary representation of 30:Ĭonverted back into hex, this is 0xFFFFFFE2. So the negative of 0xFFFFFFFF is 0x00000001, more commonly known as 1. The inversion of that binary number is, obviously: But how to do that? The class notes say (on 3.17) that to reverse the sign you simply invert the bits (0 goes to 1, and 1 to 0) and add one to the resulting number. To see what this number is a negative of, we reverse the sign of this number. That's just the way that things are in two's complement: a leading 1 means the number is negative, a leading 0 means the number is 0 or positive. What can we say about this number? It's first (leftmost) bit is 1, which means that this represents a number that is negative. That is how one would write -28 in 8 bit binary. Suppose we're working with 8 bit quantities (for simplicity's sake) and suppose we want to find how -28 would be expressed in two's complement notation. You then invert the digits, and add one to the result. To get the two's complement negative notation of an integer, you write out the number in binary. Two's complement is the way every computer I know of chooses to represent integers. Therefore, after this introduction, which explains what two's complement is and how to use it, there are mostly examples. Two's complement is not a complicated scheme and is not well served by anything lengthly. The – (-3) turns into +3.Thomas Finley, April 2000 Contents and Introduction So the equation turns into a simple addition problem.įor example: let’s say we have the problem 2 – (-3). So, instead of subtracting a negative, you’re adding a positive. Rule 4: Subtracting a negative number from a positive number – turn the subtraction sign followed by a negative sign into a plus sign. So we’re changing the two negative signs into a positive, so the equation now becomes -2 + 4.Ĭlass="green-text">The answer is -2 – (-4) = 2. This would read “negative two minus negative 4”. Basically, - (-4) becomes +4, and then you add the numbers.įor example, say we have the problem -2 - –4. So, instead of subtracting a negative, you are adding a positive. Rule 3: Subtracting a negative number from a negative number – a minus sign followed by a negative sign, turns the two signs into a plus sign. So keep counting back three spaces from -2 on the number line. Using the number line, let’s start at -2. Rule 2: Subtracting a positive number from a negative number – start at the negative number and count backwards.įor example: Say, we have the problem -2 – 3. So solve this equation the way you always have: 6 – 3 = 3. Rule 1: Subtracting a positive number from a positive number – it’s just normal subtraction.įor example: this is what you have learned before. Here are some simple rules to follow when subtracting negative numbers. When we subtract negative numbers or subtract negative numbers to positive numbers, it gets more complicated. Subtracting positive numbers, such as 4 - 2, is easy. 11/7/2023 0 Comments Lego imperial shuttle leakIf you’re thinking of purchasing any of these sets, please consider using these affiliate links as I may earn a small commission with each purchase.
